About

Who we are

WA Foil Association (WAFA) is the representative body for foil sports in Western Australia with a focus on surf (prone) foiling and downwind foiling. Run by foilers for foilers. We're here to help more people get on foil, bring the community together and give WA foiling a stronger voice.

Objectives

The objectives of the association are to:

  • promote and develop foiling sports throughout Western Australia;
  • encourage participation in recreational and competitive foiling activities;
  • act as a representative body for foiling activities in Western Australia;
  • advocate for safe and equitable access to oceans, rivers and waterways for foiling activities;
  • represent the interests of the foiling community to government agencies, local governments, marine authorities and the broader Western Australian community;
  • support the formation and development of affiliated foiling clubs throughout Western Australia;
  • promote public awareness of foiling as a safe, accessible and environmentally responsible water sport;
  • organise, sanction and promote competitions, community events, training programs and demonstrations related to foiling;
  • encourage youth participation, diversity, inclusion and environmental stewardship;
  • develop and promote safety standards and best-practice guidelines for foiling activities;
  • collaborate with sponsors, commercial organisations and event organisers to support the development of the sport; and
  • affiliate with national or international organisations that promote foiling sports.

What is foiling?

Foilers ride the energy of ocean waves and wind using a hydrofoil attached to a board.

In Western Australia, foiling takes plenty of forms: prone, foil assist, tow, downwind, wing, parawing and flat-water pump. Riders move between disciplines as their skills, gear and the conditions allow.

Access & advocacy

Safe, fair access to the water is what keeps everyone foiling. We put that case to government agencies, local governments, marine authorities and the broader Western Australian community, so foilers have a voice in the decisions that shape where and how we ride.
